Junior Naturalist Field Week August 31st - September 4th
Monday August 31st - Friday, September 4th
Meet: 9:00 am at the children's entrance to Central Library on Eastern Parkway
Pickup: 3:00 pm at the children's entrance to Central Library on Eastern Parkway
Grades: Rising Kindergarten to rising 6th grade
Every day is an adventure
We start each morning at the library with field guides and one question: what do you most want to observe today? Then we head out into the living world. It's amazing what you see when you slow down and really observe: the bee working a single flower, the bird you'd have walked right past, the whole small world in a square foot of meadow.
Each child gets their own nature journal for the week, for drawing, writing, or pressing a flower. It grows heavier by the day. Educators help the little ones. We move slowly, observe carefully, and follow what's alive.
The shape of the week
Every morning begins at the library with the field guides.
📚 Central Library: We learn, draw and journal. Choosing what we most want to look for. Everyone heads out with something to observe.
🌳 Monday, Wednesday, Friday · Prospect Park: Exploration, nature journaling, and lunch in the shade of special tree. Native bees, birds, trees, and the quiet corners most people walk right past.
🌿 Tuesday · Brooklyn Botanic Garden: Butterflies, native bees, and plants in full summer bloom. A slow, careful day of close observation.
🦣 Thursday · American Museum of Natural History: A subway trip to Manhattan and a day of observing the wonderful living world exhibits gathered under one roof. Over two visits, one each week, we will explore the Invisible Worlds, the Insectarium, the Butterfly Vivarium, gems and minerals, the Hall of Biodiversity, and our Junior Naturalist's choice of exhibits.
Rain or shine
We're an outdoor program, and a little weather doesn't stop us. If a storm is in the forecast, we may move the museum day earlier in the week. We also have a warm, dry indoor space at the Church of St. Luke’s and St. Matthew’s, if the weather or air quality truly turns. The adventure carries on either way.
What to Bring
Packed lunch and a full water bottle
Weather-appropriate clothes with an extra layer
Comfortable closed-toe shoes (no sandals)
Hat and sunscreen applied before arrival
Brooklyn Rewilders provides field guides, nature journals, snacks, and all materials.
Registration & refunds
Spaces are limited, and we plan our staffing, materials, and snacks around each child who enrolls, so registration is non-refundable. That said, life happens. If you let us know at least a week in advance, we'll do our best to accommodate you, whether that means moving your child to the other week or working out another solution together.
Have a younger child who's eager to join? If your four-year-old has spent time with us before, reach out and let's talk it through.
Before you check out
When you register, you'll confirm that you've read and agree to our Camper Code of Conduct, our Acknowledgment of Risk and Waiver, and our refund policy. These are quick, one-click confirmations.
After you register
We'll email you a link to our enrollment and health forms, one per child. These cover emergency contacts, health history, and a few permissions. Please complete them before your child's first day. A child can't join us in the field until their forms are in, so the sooner the better.
Space is limited.
Financial aid is available: email brooklynrewilders@gmail.com.
