PS 9 Prose Day in the Garden - Birds & Bees Half-Day Camp
Brooklyn Rewilders Birds & Bees Prose Day Camp in the Garden
For this upcoming Prose day, Tuesday, May 5, we will have a special garden camp in the PS9 Garden from 11:20 am–5:00 pm
Grades: PreK - 5th Grade
Location: PS 9 Bergen St Garden
We will pick up all students from their teachers in the yard at 11:20 am, spend the afternoon in the garden with access to the school for bathrooms and inclement weather.
Pick up: 5pm from the Bergen st Garden entrance.
Who else lives here?
Spring is one of the most alive moments in a Brooklyn garden. The blueberries are flowering, the bees are back, and the birds are busy. This half-day camp is built around one big question: who shares this place with us?
Kids will spend the day outside as real citizen scientists — observing, recording, making, playing, and getting their hands in the soil.
What We'll Do
🐝 Go on a bee hunt — The blueberries are flowering and something is pollinating them. We're going to find out what. Using careful observation, we'll look for native bees visiting the blossoms — bumblebees, mason bees, sweat bees — and see if we can spot a blueberry digger bee, the specialist who buzz-pollinates by grabbing the flower and vibrating her whole body to shake the pollen loose. We might find her. We might find something unexpected. That's the point.
🐦 Listen for birds — A slow, quiet listening walk through the garden to find out who's singing, where they're nesting, and what they're eating. We’ll learn to use binoculars to spot birds from afar.
🌿 Build a bee — Using materials gathered from the garden, kids create their own bees from sticks, leaves, bark, and seeds.
🧵 Weave the garden — Together, kids weave natural materials into a large shared loom — a collaborative piece made from what the garden gives us.
🪺 Nest building challenge — Can you build a nest strong enough to hold an egg? Small groups design and test their own.
🔍 Creature hunt — Magnifying glasses, close looking, and a shared "who lives here" log that stays with the garden.
🌱 Real garden work — Watering, planting, mulching, tending. Kids do actual work that the garden needs.
