PS 282 School | PreK through 5th Grade | Spring Gardening Afterschool Program
Brooklyn Rewilders Spring 2026 Afterschool Program
Our Spring 2026 Class meets Wednesday, April 15 to June 15 from 2:30–5:00 pm
Grades: PreK, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
Location: PS 282 School Garden
Schedule: Every Wednesday (except school holidays)
Let’s Grow!
Spring at Brooklyn Rewilders is all about nature, growth, and getting our hands in the soil. This semester, our program will be primarily outdoors in the PS 282 garden, where children learn directly from the living world around them.
Designed for mixed ages, this hands-on program blends gardening, cooking, art, and nature play into a joyful, immersive outdoor experience.
What We’ll Do This Spring
🌿 Adopt their own plant - Each child chooses one plant to observe all spring, measuring growth, noticing visitors (insects, birds), and sharing discoveries with the group.
🐛 Do real garden work - Watering, gentle weeding, planting, mulching. Children learn that gardens need care and their hands make a difference.
🔍 Explore freely - Significant time for child-led discovery: bug hunting with magnifying glasses, digging, building with natural materials, following curiosity wherever it leads.
🍃 Plant, tend, and taste - We'll plant beans, herbs, and quick-growing crops. We'll harvest and prepare simple healthy garden snacks together.
🎨 Create with nature - Art from garden materials, observation journals, natural paints, building projects.
🌦️ Track weather patterns and seasonal changes
🫶 Engage in storytelling, movement, and cooperative outdoor games
Activities may include:
Building simple trellises and plant signage
Starting seeds and transplanting seedlings
Making pesto, herb butters, pickles, and spring salads
Garden scavenger hunts and pollinator exploration
Nature journaling and observational drawing
By the End of the Semester, Garden Explorers Will:
🌱 Demonstrate care and responsibility for a living plant
🌎 Understand basic seasonal cycles and plant growth
👃 Use all five senses to explore the natural world
🤝 Practice teamwork, routine, and collaborative problem-solving
🍓 Build confidence in simple food preparation and trying new flavors
Program Structure
2:30–5:00 pm | Primarily outdoors in the PS 282 garden
We will be outside most days, rain or shine (with indoor classroom space available in severe weather). Please send children dressed appropriately for outdoor play.
All children will:
Create a personal garden journal for the semester
Receive materials and supplies for each lesson
Take home food projects and reusable containers
Take home a plant at the end of the semester
Snacks provided. Financial aid available.
Tax-deductible donations are also welcome to support equitable programming!
