Brooklyn Rewilders Fall Garden Scientists 2026 Afterschool Program
Meets Wednesdays, September 23 to December 16, 2:30–4:30 pm
Grades: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
Location: United Arts & Letters Garden
Schedule: Every Wednesday (except school holidays and half days)
Garden science you can taste.
The Arts & Letters garden is alive with things to grow, taste, and figure out. Kids dig in the soil, exploring who’s living there, harvest what the beds are offering, prepare seasonal snacks and shake cream into fresh butter. Then they chase the questions the garden raises: how a seed knows which way to grow, what the worms are up to down there, and how a flower becomes a fruit. Hands in the dirt, senses wide open, questions flying.
What We'll Do This Fall
🥕 Harvest and cook: work with the fall harvest and turn it into something good to eat: pesto, herb butter, quick pickles, a simple soup.
🔬 Do real garden science: start a decomposition jar, test how seeds travel, and get curious about why frost makes kale sweeter.
🍂 Do real garden work: build the compost, mulch the beds, plant fall seeds and native plants, and leave the leaves for winter insects.
🐝 Meet the wild neighbors: the pollinators our food depends on, the bumblebees getting ready for winter, and the birds and bugs who move in for the season.
🎨 Make art from the garden: hammer leaves to print their color, paint with berry juice, keep a nature journal.
🫶 Move and wonder: games and embodied play about how nature works.
By the End of the Semester, Children Will:
🌎 Understand how a garden and its food change with the season
🔍 Ask a question and test it: look closely, compare, and record
🐝 Know the pollinators and soil-builders behind their food
🍅 Try new flavors from food they helped make
Program Structure
2:30–4:30 pm | Outdoors in the United garden
We are out most days, light rain or shine, with indoor classroom space available for severe weather. Please send children dressed for outdoor play.
All children will:
Create a personal nature journal for the semester
Receive materials and supplies for each lesson
Take home nature and art projects
Snacks provided.
Financial aid available. Tax-deductible donations are also welcome to support equitable programming!
